Derek Ferrington - Artist Statement

I am always seeking a deeper connection to the natural world through intimate moments shared with nature.

Alone but not lonely. Wondering but not lost. These statements define my creative process and the experience I hope to evoke.

Photography is both an invitation and a memory. It offers me an excuse to spend time outdoors, to immerse myself in the quiet rhythms of nature. In solitude I am more present, more attuned to the subtle details that often go unnoticed.

My work is a way to share those moments of connection with others—to offer a glimpse into the beauty and stillness that nature reveals when we pause long enough to notice. Each image becomes a window into an experience, a chance to convey the sense of wonder and solitude I felt in that moment.

At the same time, my photographs serve as reminders to myself—visual echoes of time spent in places that ground and inspire me. They are markers of where I’ve been, but also reflections of what I felt. In capturing these fleeting encounters, I create memories that reconnect me to those experiences long after they’ve passed. Reminding me to return to nature not only to photograph it, but to simply be within it.

Thank you for choosing to spend time with my images. I hope they offer you a sense of connection, curiosity, and peace—and perhaps a reminder that some of life’s most profound moments arise when we simply allow ourselves to be.

About Derek Ferrington

Derek Ferrington is a nature photographer whose work highlights the beauty of natural elements through form, texture, and light. His images invite viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the essence of nature.

Influenced by photographers like Aaron Siskind, Brett Weston, Wynn bullock, and Minor White, he often ignores the third dimention, instead focusing on form and texture over depth and distance. Being drawn to details often passed by and overlooked, he is able to show a view of the world unseen by many.

Growing up in Walnut Creek, CA, he spent countless hours in the open space surrounding his neighborhood, letting the natural world be a playground of discovery. Family camping trips to the Redwoods in Humboldt county became core to influencing both his creative vision and how he relates to the world.

His Parents gave him a used Nikon FG-20 35mm camera as a high school graduation present. This started his artistic path of discovery. In an effort to be closer to his beloved Redwood Forests, he attended Humboldt State University. There he studied Photography with Don Gregorio Antón, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art in 2002.

He currently lives in Napa, CA with his wife and two boys.
